For two blocks you will need

Finished block size:

6" x 5" (15.2 x 12.7cm)

■ One rectangle of bright print, approximately 8" x 6" (20 x 15cm)

■ One rectangle of white solid, approximately 8" x 6" (20 x 15cm)

Assembling the block

1. Place the fabrics right sides together and cut the following: two rectangles each 1½" x 5½" (3.8 x 14cm), two rectangles each 4½" x 1½" (11.4 x 3.8cm), two rectangles each 3½" x 1½" (8.9 x 3.8cm) and three rectangles each 1½" x 2½" (3.8 x 6.4cm). As you are cutting two layers of fabric, you will have double this number of pieces (eighteen in total).

2. Rearrange the cut pieces to make the two blocks as shown: one positive, one negative.

3. Sew the pieces together as shown. Press the seams towards the darker fabric where possible.
